- One of the most important watermelons of the 19th century and one of our favorites. Bred at Pomaria nursery in the 1840s and offered nationally in seed catalogs by the 1850s. This variety was extremely popular throughout the 19th century with unmatched sweetness and durability. It was thought to be declined and lost to disease in the late 19th century and is not commonly grown today. Revived by seed preservers like Rodger Winn whose wife’s family had been growing it since the late 19th century. The melons are ribbed, with light green rind that is very thick and protects the melon well for storage and transportation. The seeds are white and the corse flesh is pink and these are right up there with some of the sweetest watermelons I have ever grown. We tested one at 16%+ brix last year. The vines are not loaded with fruits but they will consistently grow 30-35 lbs and we’ve harvested them close to 50 lbs. A true heirloom treasure with historical significance. 150+ years ago this variety was being grown and enjoyed all over the country. Plant some seeds and preserve and taste a piece of history!
