- 90 days. These large oblong watermelons can grow over 35 lbs and have a fine quality, juicy sweet red flesh with a rich, old fashioned flavor. Beautiful striping on the rind, which is durable and great for shipping and storage. The vines are rather productive. Developed from the Lawson watermelon in Georgia around 1830. Offered commercially by pomologist P. J. Berckmans in 1866. One of the first widely distributed watermelon varieties that has remained significant to this day. One of the oldest watermelons that is still around.
