- 90 days. 10-25 lbs. There is a legendary extinct watermelon called American pumpkin rind. This is the descendant. Incredibly important watermelon. As the plants mature the leaves variegate and some turn pure gold. The watermelon does the same as it ripens. Ending up with a beautiful golden watermelon with pumpkin like ribbing. The flesh is pink, crisp and very sweet. The flavor is bright and complex, hard to put to words but far more than just sweet. Foliage resistant to mildew, fruits resistant to sun scalding. A eye catching variety that has great eating qualities. Slower to ripen, but stores extremely well. The last watermelon I ate last year was a royal golden. Bred by Whillhite seed co. In the 1920s who offered it through the 1970s. Not widely grown today, a very rare watermelon. Grow it!
