- 85 days. A legendary variety. Large vines produce long, beautiful dark green watermelons from 20-35 lbs. Highly productive and adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Does well even with cold nights all summer. Also very tolerant to hot and dry weather. The flesh is firm, fine grained and absolutely melts in your mouth. One of the best textured watermelons and also one of the best tasting. Unbelievably sweet, but also with bright, bubblegum flavors that linger in your mouth after each bite. One of the all time favorites on the farm. Unique and beautiful red seeds. Shows moderate disease resistance. Grower and prospector Art Comb found the red seeds in a clay vessel in an abandoned cave in 1920s Arizona. He got some to germinate and they produced small crookneck watermelons without much flesh. Selecting the best fruits he was able to eventually adapt a legendary, large reliable watermelon from the seeds. Some still produce the crookneck. Some say these seeds could be thousands of years old. There is an even more elaborate story attached to this watermelon. Said to be native to America developed from other cucurbits. It’s more likely they are less than 200 years old and the original genetics were brought by the Spanish. The story could have been fabricated by a seed purveyor to sell more seeds. The variety is old none the less. With such a legendary variety, it’s no question there will be legends and folk lore attached to it. ONE OF THE BEST WATERMELONS.
